Jazz Exit
Charles Isherwood has his first run in with the Jazz world at the wedding reception of long time friend. Seemingly without direction to his life, we meet him playing chess with himself at the bar. He’s alienated from his current pack of friends and reluctant to break out and forge new acquaintances. His friend Jimmy, a successful school chum of Charles’, does his best to kick start his friend’s attention, but Charles is looking for something new. By chance, the leader of the Jazz band, the monstrously obese, Bruce Marconi, shares Charles’ interest in chess. Bruce brings Charles into a regular night of carousing, drinking and chess playing. As well, Bruce introduces Charles to Sue McKay, the band’s lead singer and purveyor of 1950’s vamp and lingo. Charles finds himself clicking with Sue, the band, and their world at the expense of his old comrades. His allegiance comes under a trial by fire when Jimmy “The Knife” pays a visit to Bruce and Charles is forced to choose between breaking his old life or sacrificing his new desires.
